Piazza Garibaldi 25 – Santa Fiora Historic Centre

Museum

The museum is housed on the ground floor in the old Sforza-Cesarini palace.  The exposition tour revolves around six rooms of which it is possible to follow the mining activities and events that relate to the strong ties that have characterized Monte Amiata between 1800 and 1900,s with particular reference to the areas around the municipalities of Santa Fiora and Castell’Azzara.  The exhibition panels document the techniques of research and extraction of Mercury from that of ancient times, illustrating the mining sites of the territory and arrays instruments used by the miners for their extraction activity. Particularly notable is the presence of a reconstruction, in house, of an underground gallery said “discenderia” (miner) equipped  with all the commonly used instruments by the miners.  Through archives and photographic documentation the museum also has chronicled the consequences of tragedies in the mines as well as the strikes and the struggles to better the miners working conditions.  The structure also houses, on the second floor, an interesting exhibition of minerals.  The bibliographic and photographic archives are available for consultation only on written request.  Guided visits of the museum are undertaken and, on bookings only, so are the chestnut woods and aqueducts (Springs) of Fiora.  From 2015 the Mining Museum of Santa Fiora has been a GOOGLE PARTNER together with another 59 worldwide institutions with their collections on Google Arts and Culture:https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/partner/museo-delle-miniere-di-mercurio-del-monte-amiata?hl=it
