Trail and Mining Tunnels of Cornacchino and Tac

Trail and Mining Tunnels of Cornacchino

Address

Cornacchino – Castell’Azzara

Museum

Thanks to financing from the “Committee for the Provisional Management of the Museum Park of the Mines of Mount Amiata” it was possible to realize a designated trail and restoration of two of the former mining tunnels of the mine of Cornacchino near Castell’Azzara. The mine, whose area covered part of a cinnabar field already known to the Etruscans, was in use from 1877 to 1919. From the existing documentation, it can be established that the two restored tunnels date from before 1889. The trail departs from the locality of “Quercia Gobba”, or “Hunchbacked Oak”, and crosses a picturesque wood for about 500 metres along the gorge of Fosso del Cornacchino, finally reaching the two mining tunnels known by the name of “Galleria Ritorta”, or “Twisted Tunnel”. The trail and tunnels can be safely visited and guided tours are available by reservation.
